My Teaching Philosophy

My teaching philosophy is something that has evolved many times over my degree program, and in my life. What is education? Why do we need it? What does it mean?

For me, education was a way out. Our lives weren't the greatest, poverty level at best. As I looked to my parents, the only thing I could deduce was that they were missing one of the most influential pieces of a modern life: education. My father only made it to the eighth grade. My mother only made it to her sophomore year in High School, later earning a GED. My stepfather made it through High School, barely. What I wanted to find was the key to breaking the poverty cycle and moving on to a more fulfilling life. I found that key in Education. I learned, I discovered, I explored worlds I didn't know existed through books and lectures. My eyes were opened to the truly endless opportunities at our feet in this world, in this life. I wanted to grab it all, and keep it with me. Education, in itself was fulfilling and made me a more complete, whole person. With that, my Teaching Philosophy is this:

The human mind is an infinitely moldable ball of clay. Whether we mold that clay into something negative and unusable, or something beautiful and fulfilling is a choice. With each day, we have the choice to expand our minds, and mold our minds to accomplish more than we dare dream. As a teacher, I am making the choice to challenge our children to take control over their minds, or, rather their clay, and mold it into something beautiful and useful. It may be black and white in the beginning, but in the end, it ends up a sophisticated, colorful work of art capable of nearly anything we will it to do. It is my goal to enlighten, inspire, and guide the modern student to shape their clay the best way they can. By using their talents, and focusing on their greatest skills, I one day plan to educate future generations so that they may take this world and make it truly great.
